Multimedia is commonly used in today’s educational environment; however, the incorporation of immersive technology is relatively new. Immersive technology can be summarized into three categories. Virtual reality (VR) is when learners interact and view an entirely virtual realm. This mainly uses some form of goggles and handheld controllers. Augmented reality (AR) is where virtual images and graphics are superimposed within the real world. This uses either a mobile device with a camera or a form of glasses that project the images for the learners to see. Lastly, there is mixed reality (MR) which is a combination of the two (VR and AR). This technology has mainly been used for entertainment purposes and is often not aligned with educational purposes. The literature on immersive technology within an educational setting is growing and there are numerous benefits for learners. However, like every education tool or method, it needs to be suitable for the learners, be purposefully implemented, and must align to measure learning objectives.

  • To find out more about immersive educational technology here is a video that goes into more depth as well as a few examples of how it can be incorporated purposefully.

  • If you are thinking or want to incorporate immersive educational technology into your courses or lessons, here is a checklist that uses evidence-based best practices to ensure that is an as effective tool for education.

Education is forever going through a cyclical process of improvement due to new technology and evidence-based best practices. It is our role as educators to remain current with new trends and find effective methods that can be purposefully implemented in courses and lessons. Immersive education technology is no different and I urge you to have fun with it, experience it, and find a way to incorporate it within your courses and lessons purposefully.
